Pastoral for the Earth

Beethoven and the climate emergency

La Fura dels Baus prepares its own version of Symphony No. 6, composed by Ludwig van Beethoven and also known as the Pastoral Symphony. Finished in 1808, it is one of Beethoven’s few programmatic works of music, and the composer subtitled it Memories of Country Life. Now, the furero Carlus Padrissa reinvents the piece under the name of Pastoral for The Planet, mixing it with other compositions by Reicha, Weber, Rietz and F. Mendessohn.

Padrissa proposes an immersive meditation on the relationship between nature and the human being, which investigates the possibility of living without consumption. Although the proposal raises the current point of rupture between the ecological harmony and resistance of the planet (dramatic and real), the work can have an unexpected script twist. It will be decided by the public itself using the immersive application Kalliope, developed by the Fundación Épica de La Fura dels Baus.

Thus, Pastoral for the Earth, which has the illustrations and set design by Mihael Milunovic and the creativity of Eyesberg, turns towards the utopian ideal -and also possible- of a global village that distributes communities and lives on the resources of nature: the deep ecology model championed by futurist industrial designer Jacque Fresco. A pioneer in human factors engineering, Fresco has achieved everything from biomedical innovations to fully integrated social systems and, through The Venus Project, championed sustainable cities, energy efficiency, natural resource management and advanced automation and related benefits that this would bring to society. La Fura dels Baus does not reinterpret the world: it awakens consciences through a virtual world that will be projected 360° into reality.

The show will feature the Belgian soprano Sophie Karthäuser and the musical interpretation of ADDA·SIMFÒNICA, conducted by its principal conductor, maestro Josep Vicent.
