DARELL ANG. Guest Conductor

Darell Ang is Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra since 2017, where he has transformed the ensemble into one of China’s most prominent orchestras. His leadership has been key to the cultural development of the country’s central-western region, promoting international tours, festivals, and large-scale educational competitions.

Recognized as a leading interpreter of contemporary Asian composers, he conducted a 2022 production of Bright Sheng’s Dream of the Red Chamber at the San Francisco Opera. He has also been invited to Lunar New Year concerts with orchestras such as the Baltimore Symphony (2024), Melbourne Symphony, and Rotterdam Philharmonic (2023).

Ang is globally valued for his artistic vision and exceptional intellect. Fluent in six languages (English, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, and Russian), he commands a broad repertoire, with training in Baroque music and harpsichord, and a strong affinity for 20th-century French and Russian music. He is also a composer of symphonic and chamber works. His Fanfare for an Exhausted Earth was premiered by the Singapore National Youth Orchestra, and his Kung Fu Koncerto has been successfully performed in China. He is a key interpreter of works by Chen Yi, Tan Dun, Zhou Long, Chen Qigang, Isang Yun, and Toru Takemitsu, performing their works on international stages.

As a guest conductor, he frequently collaborates with leading Asian orchestras such as the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Beijing’s NCPA Orchestra, Taiwan National Symphony, NHK Symphony, and Tokyo’s Yomiuri Nippon Symphony.

In Europe, he has conducted the London Philharmonic, Radio France, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, RTVE in Madrid, and Seville’s Royal Orchestra, among others. In the United States, he will debut with the Baltimore Symphony in 2024.

He is an experienced opera conductor, having worked with institutions such as the Mariinsky Theatre, Bordeaux National Opera, and Taichung National Theatre.

Winner of the Grand Prize, Audience Prize, and Orchestra Prize at the 2007 Besançon Competition, he has also won awards at the Pedrotti and Toscanini competitions and was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by France in 2015. His recording of works by Zhou Long and Chen Yi received a GRAMMY nomination.

Born in Singapore, he began his musical training at age four. He studied conducting in St. Petersburg, where he co-founded a chamber orchestra, and was the first conducting
