JOSEPH ALESSI. Trombone

Joseph Alessi began his musical studies in his native California with his father, Joseph Alessi.

During his high school years in San Rafael, California, he was a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra before continuing his musical training at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

He was appointed principal trombone of the New York Philharmonic in 1985.

Prior to joining the Philharmonic, he was second trombone with the Philadelphia Orchestra for four seasons and principal trombone with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra for one season.

He has also been a guest solo trombonist with the London Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, conducted by Pierre Boulez.

He is an active soloist and chamber musician.

In 1990, he made his solo debut with the New York Philharmonic, performing Creston’s Trombone Fantasy, and in 1992, he premiered the Pulitzer Prize-winning Trombone Concerto with the Philharmonic, which commissioned the work for its 150th anniversary celebration.

His most recent appearance as a soloist with the Philharmonic was in the world premiere of William Bolcom’s Trombone Concerto in 2017.

With the New York Philharmonic, he has performed concertos by Kazimierz Serocki, Bramwell Tovey, and William Grant Still.

In June 2021, he gave the world premiere of Chick Corea’s Trombone Concerto.

He has recorded and performed on numerous occasions with four leading trombone quartets: the New York Trombone Quartet, which made the only recording of Bartók’s Fourth String Quartet; The Four of a Kind Trombone Quartet; the World Trombone Quartet; and the Slide Monsters Trombone Quartet.

He is currently a member of the faculty at the Juilliard School; his students now hold positions in many of the leading symphony orchestras in the United States and around the world.

As an artist/teacher with Eastman-Shires Instrument Co., he has given masterclasses worldwide and toured extensively in Europe as a conductor and soloist.

He has performed as a soloist with several leading bands, including the United States Military Academy Band at West Point, the United States Army Band (Pershing’s Own), and the United States Marine Band (President’s Own).

In addition, he has performed with the Maria Schneider Orchestra and the Village Vanguard Orchestra, and has recorded with jazz greats J.J. Johnson and Steve Turre.

His discography includes Trombonastics, Fandango, An American Celebration, and Beyond the End of the Century, among others.

George Crumb’s recording of Starchild on the Bridge label, where he performed as a solo artist, won a Grammy Award in 1999-2000.
