YEOL EUM SON. Piano
Pianist Yeol Eum Son stands out for her poetic elegance and innate interpretive sensitivity, qualities that, combined with impeccable technical control, make her a profoundly versatile performer. Her curiosity drives her to explore a broad repertoire, from Bach and Mozart to contemporary composers like Shchedrin and Kapustin.
She has collaborated with conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Valery Gergiev, Antonio Pappano, Dmitri Kitajenko, Andrew Manze, Pablo González, and Omer Meir Welber, among many others. Recent engagements include concerts as Artist-in-Residence with the Residentie Orkest in The Hague and debuts with orchestras such as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, and Scottish Chamber Orchestra, as well as participation in festivals like Edinburgh and Rosendal, alongside Leif Ove Andsnes.
In the 2024/25 season, she will debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at London’s Barbican Centre and perform with the Düsseldorf Symphony, Tonkünstler Orchestra at
Vienna’s Musikverein, and orchestras such as the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Galicia Symphony, Naples Philharmonic, St. Louis, Baltimore, and Los Angeles Philharmonic. She will also return to ensembles like the Ottawa National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Porto Symphony Orchestra. In chamber music, she will debut at festivals in Singapore, Melbourne, and Adelaide.
Over the past decade, Yeol Eum has solidified her international prestige, performing with the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, Radio France, Budapest
Festival Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, Mariinsky Orchestra, and many others.
Born in Wonju, South Korea, in 1986, she began playing the piano at age three. She won awards at the Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians (1997) and the Oberlin Competition (1999). Her international breakthrough came with the second prize and the chamber music performance distinction at the 2009 Van Cliburn Competition, and the Silver Medal at the 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition, where she also received two special prizes.
A Mozart specialist, her performance of Concerto No. 21 has garnered nearly 23 million views on YouTube. Her discography includes notable releases on Decca, Onyx, and Naïve, with repertoire ranging from Kapustin and Schumann to the complete Mozart piano sonatas.
