RUNE BERGMANN. Guest Conductor
Norwegian conductor Rune Bergmann is currently Music Director of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (Canada) since the 2017/18 season, Principal Conductor of the Argovia Philharmonic (Switzerland) since 2016/17, and Music Director of the Peninsula Music Festival in Wisconsin since 2022/23. He is also Artistic Director of the Fjord Cadenza Festival in Norway since its founding in 2010. He previously served as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Szczecin Philharmonic (Poland) from 2016/17 to 2023/24.
He has built a distinguished international career, frequently guest-conducting major North American orchestras such as the Baltimore, Colorado, Utah, Houston, Pacific, and Buffalo Symphonies. In Europe, he has worked with the Oslo Philharmonic, Norwegian National Opera Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic, Beethovenorchester Bonn, ADDA·Simfònica Orchestra, Valencia Orchestra, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Staatskapelle Halle, and Wrocław Philharmonic, among others. He has also conducted in Sweden, Denmark, and Lithuania.
In opera, he has led productions of Il barbiere di Siviglia and La traviata at the Norwegian National Opera and debuted in the U.S. with Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Yale Opera, staged by Claudia Solti.
Bergmann has collaborated with some of the world’s most prestigious soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, Renée Fleming, Truls Mørk, Leif Ove Andsnes, Mischa Maisky, Jefim Bronfman, James Ehnes, Branford Marsalis, and Anna Fedorova.
In 2018, he released his first recording with the Szczecin Philharmonic, featuring Mieczysław Karłowicz’s Resurrection Symphony in E minor, a work that has become a core part of his repertoire. He has also recorded with the Argovia Philharmonic, including Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major and Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major.
In his early years, he was First Kapellmeister and Deputy Music Director at the Augsburg Theatre, where he conducted operas such as La traviata, Der fliegende Holländer, and Die Fledermaus. He was also Principal Guest Conductor of the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra (Lithuania).
Bergmann studied choral and orchestral conducting with Anders Eby, Jin Wang, and Jorma Panula at the Royal College of Music in Sweden and graduated with honors from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he was a student of maestro Leif Segerstam.
