Manuel de Falla, El Retablo de Maese Pedro.

An exciting show produced by the Etcétera Group, one of the most prestigious puppet workshops in Spain, directed by Enrique Lanz, whose grandfather was the author of the original puppets commissioned by Falla for the premiere of the work in Paris.

Performed with giant puppets over seven meters high, faithfully inspired by the original premiered in 1923, and with a staging that uses the resource of the theater within the theater, fiction and reality are mixed in a unique proposal.

The musical direction is in charge of Josep Vicent in front of ADDA-SIMFÒNICA ALICANTE with a cast formed by Mikeldi Atxalandabaso,

José Antonio López and Marisa Martins. The performers give their voice from the stage to the gigantic characters that develop the action.

Inspired by Chapter XXVI of the second part of Don Quixote, of which Falla was a faithful reader since his childhood, El retablo de Maese Pedro tells the episode of Cervantes’ novel in which Maese Pedro and his assistant, Trujamán, offer a puppet show in which the medieval romance “el retablo de la libertad de Melisendra” (Melisendra’s tableau of freedom) is told. Among those attending the performance are Don Quixote and Sancho. The nobleman, fully immersed in the action, confuses reality and fiction. Enrique Lanz has conceived a show in which, emulating Cervantes, transports us to different universes, real and unreal, taking from the author the resource of the theater within the theater. In this way, the audience is involved in a game of illusions wrapped by the expressive and intense music of the composer from Cadiz.
