RAI NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Founded in 1994, its first concerts were conducted by Georges Prêtre and Giuseppe Sinopoli. Since then, it has collaborated with many of the finest instrumentalists of its generation.
Its principal conductor is Andrés Orozco-Estrada. Previous conductors include James Conlon (2016-2020), Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos (2001-2007), and Juraj Valčuha (2009- 2016). Jeffrey Tate was principal guest conductor (1998-2002), preceded by Gianandrea Noseda (2003-2006). From 1996 to 2001, Eliahu Inbal was its honorary conductor.
Notable conductors on its podium include Giulini, Sawallisch, Rostropovich, Chung, Maazel, Mehta, Ahronovitch, Gergiev, Janowski, Bychkov, Kirill Petrenko, Jurowski, Chailly, Albrecht, Hänchen, Franck, Eschenbach, Gatti, and Harding.
It holds regular concerts and special cycles in Turin; since 2013, it has also participated in classical music festivals organized by the city council and is invited to major festivals such as MITO SettembreMusica, the Venice Biennale, Ravenna Festival, Verdi Festival in Parma, and Sagra Malatestiana in Rimini.
Its institutional commitments include Christmas concerts in Assisi, broadcast worldwide, Republic Day celebrations, and the Christmas concert at the Senate.
In addition to international tours, its participation in the Salzburg Festival and Berlin Philharmonie, it has performed in the United Arab Emirates, Vienna Musikverein, the RadiRO Festival in Bucharest (2012), and the Enescu Festival in 2013. It toured Germany, Switzerland, Russia, and Italy. It performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Royal Opera House in Muscat (Oman) in 2016, played at Vienna’s Konzerthaus in 2017, and at the Dvořák Festival in Prague in 2019. Since 2017, it has been the principal orchestra of the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.
It has participated in opera films such as Traviata à Paris, Rigoletto in Mantua, directed by Mehta and Bellocchio, and Cenerentola, una favola in diretta, broadcast on Rai1. It also records themes and soundtracks for RAI programs. It produces CDs and DVDs of its live concerts. Its pedagogical activity, dedicated to young and very young audiences, is also significant, with performances, concerts, and masterclasses.
MICHAEL BARENBOIM. Violín
Michael Barenboim (1985) is a soloist and chamber musician on violin and viola, founder of ensembles, concertmaster of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, and professor at the Barenboim-Said Akademie, roles that exemplify his versatility and creativity.
Since his debut as a soloist with Schoenberg’s Violin Concerto under Pierre Boulez in 2011, he has been an integral part of the international music scene. His passion for contemporary music is reflected in his performances of 20th- and 21st-century works, both as a soloist and chamber musician. He has performed with major orchestras such as the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra, La Scala Philharmonic, Santa Cecilia Academy, Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and Philharmonia Orchestra, among others.
In chamber music, with the West-Eastern Divan Ensemble, he tours worldwide. He co-founded the Ensemble Nasmé with Palestinian musicians, performing in major venues globally. He regularly plays at London’s Wigmore Hall, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, Sydney Opera House, and Naples’ San Carlo Theatre. Other engagements include Carnegie Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, Paris National Opera, London’s Barbican Centre, Dortmund, and the Salzburg Festival.
In the 2024/25 season, he will perform with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under Domingo Hindoyan, Frankfurt Museum Orchestra with Thomas Guggeis, Jena Philharmonic Orchestra with Simon Gaudenz, Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn conducted by Risto Joost, Barenboim-Said Foundation Orchestra with Oksana Lyniv, Vienna Chamber Orchestra with Wilson Hermanto, and the Armenian Symphony Orchestra with Sergey Smbatyan. He will return to the Verbier Festival with Lahav Shani and cellist Alisa Weilerstein.
His discography for Deutsche Grammophon includes recordings of Mozart’s piano quartets and trios, as well as the complete Beethoven piano trios with Kian Soltani and Daniel Barenboim. In 2023, he recorded Elgar’s Violin Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London.
ANDRÉS OROZCO-ESTRADA. Conductor
Energy, elegance, and spirit are what particularly distinguish Andrés Orozco-Estrada as a musician. Following a magnificent collaboration with the RAI National Symphony
Orchestra in May 2022, he was appointed its new principal conductor starting in the 23/24 season, celebrating its 30th anniversary on October 24 with two concerts in Turin. From the 2025/26 season, he will assume the role of General Music Director (GMD) of the city of Cologne and Kapellmeister of the Gürzenich Orchestra. Orozco-Estrada places great importance on inspiring Cologne’s residents with music and representing the city as a musical hub internationally. This season, a series of Carmen performances will mark his operatic debut as designated GMD.
At the start of the 24/25 season, Orozco-Estrada debuted with performances of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro at Dresden’s Semperoper. Other debuts will see him conduct the NHK Symphony in Tokyo, the KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul, and the Spanish National Orchestra (OCNE) in Madrid.
He has been re-invited to conduct the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle, Orchestre National de France, Gothenburg Symphony, Bamberger Symphoniker, Swedish Radio Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, and the SWR, WDR, and Berlin DSO radio orchestras. He will also return to the Frankfurt hr-Sinfonieorchester (principal conductor 2014-2021) and the Houston Symphony Orchestra (principal conductor 2014- 2022).
Born in Medellín, Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his musical training playing the violin and receiving his first conducting lessons at age 15. In 1997, he moved to Vienna, where he
was accepted into the conducting class of Uroš Lajovic, a student of the legendary Hans Swarowsky, at the prestigious University of Music and Performing Arts. Since October 2022, Orozco-Estrada has been a professor of orchestral conducting at the same university.
