The three pillars of flamenco are dance, song, and guitar. In his album Al toque (Karonte, 2021), Caminero explored flamenco guitar from a unique perspective, reinterpreting major works for his trio featuring Moisés Sánchez on piano and Paquito González on percussion. Now, with Al cante, he seeks to integrate the Jerez-born voice of David Carpio into his jazz- flamenco repertoire.

This new project leverages the modular structure of flamenco—often alternating between cante, rhythm, and falsetas—to blend the trio’s melodies and solos with David’s powerful voice. Together, they explore new ways for a jazz-flamenco trio and a cantaor to coexist musically.

After more than a decade performing with master guitarist Gerardo Núñez, Caminero has become a regular figure in the flamenco world. Along the way, he met David Carpio, with whom he had previously collaborated on the show Solos and several tracks from the album Con la voz en la tierra (2019). It was only a matter of time before they reunited for a project like this— one that presents both musical and stylistic challenges, where pieces from seemingly different worlds find common ground and create a seamless, natural sound.

Caminero’s jazz trio is currently composed of Daniel García Diego on piano and Shayan Fathi on drums, musicians with a deep understanding of jazz- flamenco. Thanks to their experience, the trio supports David’s voice without the need for a guitar—that symbolic “home” so central to flamenco.

Al cante is both a jazz-flamenco concert and a cante recital, offering a one- of-a-kind experience that bridges both worlds.

DAVID CARPIO BIOGRAPHY
